Simpson Art and Orchestra students shared their many talents and creations at the Art and Orchestra Showcase. Those in attendance were encouraged to browse the variety of art creations while listening to the amazing talents of the Simpson Orchestra.

Each month, Simpson students have the opportunity to participate in an informal STEAM challenge sponsored by the eighth grade science department. Students are offered activities that are not normally included in the curriculum in the STEAM academic or connections classes. The club is designed to engage students in a variety of problem solving activities that challenge their critical thinking skills in a fun and creative environment. Click here For more information...Simpson students and their families get to participate in a yearly STEAMAPALOOZA. Teachers and community members join together to offer a variety of hands on activities to inspire STEAM learning. Consisting of students across all three grade levels, the crochet club explores some of the STEAM principles inherent, though perhaps not obvious, in the process of crochet. The club first learns the process of crochet while discussing the various tools and equipment necessary to create interesting crocheted products. They discuss the basics of color theory in the many choices that they make for their projects. Finally, the use math in reading, and eventually creating, patterns for their crochet projects. Each year, the Simpson yearbook is produced by a diverse group of students. They learn the basics of photography, visual design, layout, caption-writing, and project management. The yearbook staff works extensively with technology in taking photos of school events and classes, designing and laying out pages using layout software, and marketing the book for sales through websites and social media. They learn and apply artistic principals of space, form, balance, and color through their layout. They also apply their knowledge of measurement and planes through a gridded layout system. 7th grade students had the opportunity to showcase their STEAM block data art projects during the Data Art Gallery Walk. Works were displayed throughout the seventh grade wing. 8th grade students had the opportunity to compete in a grade level STEAM fair. During the 1st semester students worked collaboratively on STEAM/Science fair projects during STEAM block . Students were given the freedom to choose any project topic that involved science or technology. The projects were then presented at the end of semester with finalists going on to the Cobb County Science Fair. Inklings is the student writing club at Simpson Middle School. Sponsored by Mrs. Krista Wilson, the club focuses on writing in genres outside those found in the ELA curriculum. Inklings spend a lot of time on Science Fiction as well as Fan Fiction. They discuss the process or writing science fiction, examine the themes and topics covered in science fiction and research the same in order to lend credibility to their own writing. They also use technological means to share their writing, elicit feedback from their peers, and publish their writing to the outside world. Students have been competing in the FLL Robotics competition for the past 4 years. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE is a research and robotics program introducing youngsters to science and technology in a sporty atmosphere. Teams are researching a given topic and they build & program an autonomous LEGO robot solving missions. Students have the opportunity to compete in BEST Robotics competition. BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) is a national six-week robotics competition in the United States held each fall, designed to help interest middle school and high school students in possible engineering careers. |
