Consisting of students across all three grade levels, the crochet club explores some of the STEAM principles inherent, though perhaps not obvious, in the process of crochet. The club first learns the process of crochet while discussing the various tools and equipment necessary to create interesting crocheted products. They discuss the basics of color theory in the many choices that they make for their projects. Finally, the use math in reading, and eventually creating, patterns for their crochet projects. Each year, the Simpson yearbook is produced by a diverse group of students. They learn the basics of photography, visual design, layout, caption-writing, and project management. The yearbook staff works extensively with technology in taking photos of school events and classes, designing and laying out pages using layout software, and marketing the book for sales through websites and social media. They learn and apply artistic principals of space, form, balance, and color through their layout. They also apply their knowledge of measurement and planes through a gridded layout system. 7th grade students had the opportunity to showcase their STEAM block data art projects during the Data Art Gallery Walk. Works were displayed throughout the seventh grade wing. |
